How it holds the cold

Construction

A cold tub is a flask

Everything that matters happens in the wall and the lid, not in the shape of the thing. Water loses heat to the air around it, so the job of the tub is to slow that down. Here is what sits between your water and the outside, outermost first.

Outer shell

Takes the abrasion and the sunlight

Insulating core

Does most of the work

Reflective barrier

Limits heat gained from the sun

Inner liner

The surface the water sits against

The range

The difference between them is capacity, wall thickness, and whether a chiller does the cooling instead of ice.

Hose in, valve out

Setup

Four steps, then it lives outside

No plumbing and no building work. The slow part is inflating the rim, and you only do that once.

1

Site it

Level ground that can carry the filled weight. Once it is full it cannot be moved.

2

Inflate the rim

Use the supplied pump, and do it before you fill rather than after.

3

Fill from a hose

Cold tap water is enough for most of the British year. Add ice only if you want to go below what the tap gives you.

4

Keep the lid on

Between sessions the lid does most of the temperature work. Uncovered, it warms up considerably faster.

Which one to buy

All three are insulated tubs. What changes is the size, the wall, and whether a chiller is doing the cooling instead of ice.

Before you use it

Cold water immersion carries a risk of cold shock and cardiac events. Do not use alone. Keep sessions short and get out if you feel unwell, numb or disoriented. Not suitable if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or a circulatory disorder, or during pregnancy, without advice from your doctor. Children and non-swimmers must be supervised at all times. Empty the tub or secure the lid when it is not in use.
